A Brief Explanation and History of Challenge Coins
Challenge coins are in fact a coin shape which is made from a certain kind of metal. It could be made from bronze, silver, gold, platinum or perhaps a mixture from different metals. Its shape is in fact not always round. There are those that are triangular or is shaped for a certain meaning that it projects. This has a logo on its front and it also have a raised emblem which is on its front and back. A certain slogan, date or name of the unit is used for a challenge coin, which is given to members of the military. If it is given as a form of award for its completed missions or a job which is difficult, it is usually commemorated on the coin itself.
The first challenge coins were in fact given to the military and although its story varies on every telling, the basic one actually includes a member of the military challenging the fellow members in producing a coin. If they cannot they need to buy the drinks and when they did, the challenger will be the one to make the necessary purchase. The organization of the coin also is attributed towards the branch of the military, which is the United States Air Force. They also were carried by the ones who flew to enemy territory and is also were considered as one of the bravest on the branch of military.
Challenge coins also were called as honor coins. Another thing is that they were carried by the members of the Marines, Army, Coast Guard, Navy, Air Force, etc. The popularity of the coin skyrocketed that a lot of civil servants today now possess the coin. These coins in fact have the department where the person is being or was employed and the military coin possess the division or the squadron as the emblem. The coins also were given to a lot of the members of the organization these days and sold to honor special occasions.
The members of the Air Force will receive the coin after they complete the basic training. When an officer training is selected upon the graduation, new officers will be given with a coin. In order to keep up with its original meaning, it was believed that the rules of the challenge should be kept with the military unit as well as the ones that were provided with the coin by their unit.
If it is given for recognition on a certain accomplishment, the coins mostly are exchanged during a handshake. It then will be passed by the giver to the receiver and a short explanation will also be provided for the reason of awarding the coin.
